I started making short documentaries a couple of years before the pandemic. I wanted to tell stories in a way that could convey more information, whilst presenting emotion and ideas differently. My first finished documentary entitled ‘Cummeragunja’ tells the story of the Cummeragunja Aboriginal Station. It’s a formative piece that I had to force myself to finish, because my abilities as a filmmaker grew significantly in the short amount of time I was working on it. This meant that as I neared the end of production, I could very clearly see the endless sea of changes I would want to make if I were to start again.
This is how all art is for me, and probably for many other creators. It’s about what we learn, and enjoy as part of the journey, without getting caught up in trying to make things perfect. It means that the next piece of work will be significantly better than the last.
